The Guild Art Center and Gallery (Center) is designed to address several vital conditions that are foundational to community well-being in the North Okanogan Valley. This project offers a proactive, inclusive solution by transforming a vacant downtown space into a vibrant and attractive hub for creativity, learning, economic growth, and connection.

The impacted vital conditions reflect both the immediate needs and long-term aspirations of the community.

Belonging and Civic Muscle

Social isolation and disappointment in rural communities like Oroville undermine resilience and civic engagement. This project fosters belonging by creating accessible third spaces for shared artistic experiences, dialogue, and collaboration.

  • Affordable classes and events promote mental wellness, social connection, and creative expression.
  • Art classes are inclusive of all ages and abilities, including special needs children.
  • Programming reflects the cultural heritage of Hispanic and Indigenous populations, promoting cross-cultural understanding.
  • The artists will cultivate a supportive network for creatives, encouraging civic participation and mutual empowerment.

Research shows that shared creative experiences build empathy across generations and cultures, strengthening the social fabric and inspiring deeper community involvement.

Lifelong Learning

Oroville’s adult population faces significant educational challenges, with 23% lacking a high school diploma. The North Okanogan Valley has a 25% higher proportion of older adults than the County average. These populations and others would benefit from learning opportunities.

  • The Center will offer firsthand training in digital tools and creative disciplines, supported by high-speed fiber optic internet
  • A dedicated digital learning hub will serve marginalized and disabled populations, with ADA-compliant facilities and proximity to transit and senior services.
  • While focused on arts and digital education, classroom spaces are adaptable for broader learning opportunities, fostering continuous personal growth.

Meaningful Work and Wealth

Local artists and craftspeople lack access to professional equipment, retail space, and business training. The nearest art center is over 70 miles away.

  • The Center will provide studio workspace, tools, and gallery access to help creatives generate income and build entrepreneurial skills.
  • Artists are trained in point-of-sale systems, marketing, and inventory management, preparing them to operate sustainable micro-enterprises.
  • Entry into the artists’ cooperative is low-cost and debt-free, reducing barriers for low-income individuals.
  • Three low-income residents will be employed through an AARP workforce program, receiving on-the-job training and support.
  • By activating a vacant storefront, the Center increases the economic vibrancy of downtown Oroville. The gallery and gift shop will attract foot traffic, increase downtown dwell time, and support nearby small businesses.
  • The project aims to inspire businesses in over a dozen vacant storefronts, encouraging entrepreneurship and investment in North Okanogan Valley's future.

Thriving Natural World

Downtown Oroville suffers from blighted commercial properties and underutilized public space.

  • The project converts a vacant setback into a welcoming green space with native plantings, seating, and educational signage designed to encourage visitors to appreciate the region and conservation of its natural resources.
  • A community mural, funded by ArtsWA, will celebrate the region’s natural beauty and biodiversity, fostering environmental awareness and pride of place.
